Katariina received her Master’s in Bioengineering from the University of Tampere, Finland. The focus of her studies was in bacterial and environmental bioengineering. Currently she is a PhD student at Nord University. Her research focus is on developing imaging flow cytometry based phenotyping methods for diatoms, a group of microalgae. Diatoms are interesting due to their silica and lipid production. In addition to phenotyping diatoms, she is looking into evolving a more robust diatom strain for industrial purposes using adaptive laboratory evolution.
