Maarten Smits

PhD candidate NTNU

About

Maarten Smits is a PhD candidate at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology
(NTNU), where he studies how climate warming affects woodland strawberry performance
and its interactions with field dodder (Cuscuta campestris) and northern root-knot nematodes (Meloidogyne hapla). He has a background in plant science and molecular biology, with previous work on host–pathogen interactions at Wageningen University & Research and Nagasaki University. Before joining NTNU, he worked as a Plant Scientist in controlled environment agriculture, studying how growth conditions shape plant physiology, stress responses, and crop performance.
